Chances are, even if you don’t know them by name, you’ve encountered some stunning pieces by jewelry brand The Right Hand Gal, gracing the necks, wrists and lobes of celebs from Meghan Markle to Emily Blunt to Kelly Ripa. With an ultra-understated, classic style and a message of strength and self-love behind each piece, this is one brand that will surely suit everyone in your squad.
From simple, stackable baguette rings to diamond-studded monogram necklaces, these are wear-forever pieces — but there’s more to them than a pretty design. According to founders (and sisters) Randi and Shawna Herlich, “Empowerment is at the core for us, so there is always a little story or meaning behind every beautiful piece we create.”
Considering that the brand’s motto is “the left hand is reserved for the misters, but the right hand is reserved for the sisters,” there is a clear theme of sisterhood and self-reliance that runs throughout the line. The founders told Womanista that they wanted to encourage women to treat themselves to a beautiful, lasting piece of jewelry, rather than feeling that they had to wait for a man to “put a ring on it.”
“It is all part of having the confidence that comes from being able to take care of yourself independently,” they explain. While we rarely need an excuse to treat ourselves to a little sparkle, the message of independence is one that resonates deeply with many women.
As you can tell from its female-first message, the label is incredibly principled. Though the brand is based in Montreal, Randi and Shawna have been dedicated to working with USA-based suppliers from the beginning: “We could easily mass-produce overseas and make a lot more money doing so,” they told us candidly, “but we choose to make all our quality jewels in Canada so we can support our own economy. We also make it a point to support our USA friends by buying all our findings from the USA.”
Plus, USA-based shoppers will also find that the conversion rate works in their favor, making the already-affordable pieces on The Right Hand Gal even more reasonable —and people are noticing.
“No names mentioned, but we had one celebrity literally purchase our Magic bracelets in every gemstone color possible… and I mean, every single color,” they revealed. With so many stackable, layerable styles to mix and match, it’s easy to see how one could build quite a collection of their pieces.
Though the brand has plenty of stories from diamond-seeking celebs, the best story by far came from a relatively innocuous order for a monogrammed necklace.
“We received an order from one of the stores we sell to for a mini initial necklace with the letters M and H. We thought nothing of it at the time… however, what we did not know was that this little necklace with these particular initials was about to make a huge amount of noise! The story is that the necklace was ordered for Prince Harry’s new girlfriend Meghan Markle... When Prince Harry arrived in Toronto and Meghan Markle walked out wearing our necklace, the media went crazy!”
In this instance, an understated piece of jewelry actually made a huge statement. Since then, the mini initial necklace has remained one of the brand’s most popular pieces.
Though the brand is no stranger to celeb endorsements, what continues to drive the founders is their own bond and shared vision for the future. “We are best friends and could not imagine working with anyone else,” they say. “Watching something come to life from your imagination to fruition is a very exciting process... the business is really like a dream for us.” A diamond-studded dream, no less.
