Serena Williams took to social media to address recent comments made about her unborn child by Romanian tennis captain Ilie Nastase.
The professional tennis player expressed her disappointment over Nastase’s offensive remarks on Instagram Monday. During a recent press conference at the Fed Cup in Romania, Nastase was heard speaking about Williams and her fiancé Alex Ohanian’s child, "Let's see what color it has. Chocolate with milk?"
The International Tennis Federation launched an investigation into the incident and Williams said she gives her full support.
"It disappoints me to know we live in a society where people like Ilie Nastase can make such racist comments towards myself and unborn child, and sexist comments against my peers," the athlete wrote on Instagram.
"I have said it once and I'll say it again, this world has come so far but yet we have so much further to go," Williams added. "Yes, we have broken down so many barriers—however there are a plethora more to go."
Williams went on to quote Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” poem, "This or anything else will not stop me from pouring love, light and positivity into everything that I do. I will continue to take a lead and stand for what's right."
"I humbly thank the ITF for any consideration given to all the facts in this case. They will have my full support."
Nastase has been provisionally suspended from the Fed Cup for her outburst against the British team and an umpire during a match.
