A new soap opera is bringing middle school drama to YouTube.
The 30-minute teen drama In Our Lifetime premiered last month at Venture Cinema 12 in Duluth, Georgia with the pilot episode now available on YouTube. Creator Tari K. Robinson, who plans to release four to six more episodes in September, created the show to fill what she saw as a void in teen dramas.
"There are all these dramas that are teen-based...but not any that are soap operas," Robinson said. Robinson, who has created, written, directed and financed numerous projects with her T&T Management and Production, says the show is "like a Young and the Restless, but for kids."
The show centers its drama around the rivalry between the popular girl, Taylor, and a new girl, Amaya, at a private middle school. The main cast ranges in age from 10 to 15-years-old. Sofy Barahona, the actress portraying Amaya, is only 10-years-old.
"There's a lot of drama in this, and a lot of hair flipping, which is really fun, Barahona said. "It's actually a really fun character play."
Her co-star, Kylissa Katalinich who plays Taylor, agrees that being part of the show is fun.
"I've never thought of myself as like, super crazy popular in school, so it's crazy to think it's like completely opposite. It's really fun to play the mean girl," Katalinich said.
Despite the young cast and characters, the soap tackles real-life issues teens are dealing with. The first episode deals with alcohol, drugs and a secret relationship between a teacher and a student with more drama planned for future episodes. But even for the subject matter, Robinson is careful to keep things suitable for the cast and audience.
"We're really careful about how edgy we can be," she said, but even being careful won't diminish the drama. "These subsequent episodes will have epic drama!"
