Aside from their beautiful home renovations and hilarious banter, we love the couple’s honest depiction of their family life.
Although the Gaines kids, Drake, 11, Ella Rose, 9, Duke, 8, and Emmie Kay 7, may be more well-known than their friends, that doesn’t change too much about their lives.
The Fixer Upper stars have been very careful about keeping their kids out of the spotlight and maintaining a normal home life. Based on their show and Instagram feeds, they are doing a pretty good job!
There is a lot more to the Gaines kids than you may actually know. Read below to learn some fun facts about the sweet kids.
They are not spoiled.
Don’t be fooled, the Gaines children are far from spoiled. Their parents may be famous, but that didn’t change they way they were raised.
The HGTV couple describes themselves as strict parents, especially when it comes to phones and TV time.
The mother of four told PEOPLE that she will not allow her kids to have phones until they go to college.
The famous family doesn’t even have a television in their home. "So they don't really understand that we have a show," she said. "They don't get it."
Their lives remain relatively private.
In addition to living a simple life, the kids are kept out of the spotlight. "They're so young and we want to give them the chance to have a normal childhood," Joanna told PEOPLE.
However, the kids have made special appearances on Fixer Upper and serve as their parent’s little helpers.
The girls share hobbies.
Ella Rose and Emmie Kay love to bake and sew!
They are taking lessons to learn how to weave on a loom, knit and make jewelry.
The girls even made the amazing quilt below.
Drake was the couple's "shop baby."
The oldest child, Drake, was named after the historic hotel Drake Hotel in New York City where his parents spent their honeymoon.
Drake is also known as their “shop baby” because he would spend every day at the couple’s original Magnolia Market, where he earned the nickname.
Drake is the football player of the family. His dad says he has a good arm.
Ella Rose has an eye for design.
The eldest Gaines daughter, Ella Rose, is a big fan of interior design. She assisted her mom on a Fixer Upper episode last season and asked her if she could be a designer when she grows up.
Ella Rose will have the best mentor if she continues with her passion of design!
Duke is a little cowboy.
The youngest boy, Duke, is a cowboy just like his dad. Duke also follows in his father’s footsteps and loves playing baseball.
He's a lefty and a "heck of a ball player," Chip, who played college baseball for Baylor University, said in an episode of Fixer Upper.
He also has a great sense of humor! Chip shared on Twitter a funny conversation he had with Duke, writing, "Boys, when you get older I want to parachute with you guys!"
Duke's responded, "But dad when we're older you'll be almost dead?"
Emmie Kay has a wild side.
Emmie Kay is the free spirit in the family. Although she is the youngest, her dad says she is very brave.
She is also a genuinely sweet kid. "I asked Emmie Kay what she would tell everyone as inspiration for the New Year," her mom shared. Emmie responded, "Just be nice. To everyone. And unicorns if they are alive."
