First, they made a designer version of the Ikea Frakta bag and charged over $2,000 and now Balenciaga is at it again.
The Italian luxury fashion house capitalized on the notoriety from the faux Ikea bag and revealed their latest offering — an $1,100 handbag styled to look like a simple paper shopping bag.
Cosmopolitan reports that the bag, which is white with “Balenciaga” written in black on it, is nearly identical to the bag the brand uses for sales. The biggest difference between the two bags are the materials. The shopping bag is paper while the luxury version is white calfskin with black Napa leather handles. The leather bag also come with zippers and pockets, a feature the paper shopping bag does not have.
The fancy faux shopping bag has already sold out, but that hasn’t stopped Twitter from responding to Balenciaga’s latest handbag trolling. The reactions range from outright confusion, shock, reminders that Chanel already did this trick and some people who just have no words.
Read on to see how Twitter is reacting to the latest Balenciaga shopping bag.
Some people just called as they saw it
There was a lot of disbelief about the cost of the Balenciaga shopping bag. With a price tag of $1,100, many reacted less to the bag itself and more to the fact that the bag had sold out so quickly. Some considered this the territory of the bored and rich, while others were a little salty about it, mentioning that the bag, or any bag for that matter, simply isn't worth the steep price tag.

I don't care how rich you are, no bag is worth $1,100 https://t.co/Vwci4KUjWi— Cade (@Cade_Meadows) June 21, 2017
Others were all for the fancy faux bag.
Despite the high price tag, there were people who were definitely interested in the leather shopper. With the bag selling out so quickly there's no doubt there was a market for it and for every person in disbelief about the high-end tote's design and price there were people genuinely excited who were ready to break out the credit card to get their own Balenciaga shopping bag.
Some couldn’t put words to their feelings and had to go straight to images to express just how much they liked the designer offering.
Still others didn't feel the need to get too excited.
So Balenciaga made a leather version of the regular shopping bag? Some people on Twitter weren't phased at all, not by the bag's price tag, not by it's existence and not even by the fact that it had already sold out. These people were winning in both style and budget.
Why? Because they already had the paper shopping bag so they could be stylish without breaking the bank. The bags are so similar anyway so who is going to notice?

And a few knew that Chanel had done this first.
While everyone else was reacting to Balenciaga's bag a few savvy fashionistas with long memories sat back and rightly rolled their eyes at the hubbub. These fashionable few knew that the Balenciaga shopping bag was no big deal because Chanel had already done it. Back in 2009 Chanel sold their own high-end version of a shopping bag making this latest offering from Balenciaga nothing more than an Italian take on what the French had done first.
Love it or hate it, like the faux Frakta bag, the shopping bag is no longer available but it definitely makes us wonder what ordinary sack Balenciaga will make fancy next.
