A man has been sentenced to two years in prison after dangling a baby out of a high-rise window in order to receive "likes" on Facebook, the BBC reports.

The man reportedly posted a photo of the moment to Facebook with the caption, "1,000 likes or I will drop him."

Algeria's privately owned Ennahar TV reported that the man, a relative of the infant, denied putting him in harm's way, claiming the photo had been altered by social media users.

"The picture was taken in a balcony with protective barriers. These were removed," the man was quoted as saying.

Algerian outlet Al Arabiya reported that, "the child appeared to be in a state of fear and bewilderment" in the photo.

The infant's father appeared in court and asked that the man be forgiven as he was just playing a game with the child.
