As cities from coast to coast celebrate the Fourth of July there are sure to be a lot of fireworks displays, but the country’s largest fireworks extravaganza is Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular. The annual event will be broadcast live from New York City so everyone in the United States can enjoy the festivities.
The Spectacular will air as a two-hour special on NBC and NBC’s app Tuesday night starting with entertainment starting at 8 p.m. ET. The fireworks, which will light up the sky in New York City’s East River, are scheduled to begin around 9:25 p.m. ET. However, Us Weekly reports, if you miss the live broadcast NBC will be broadcasting an encore at 10 p.m. ET.
The event is being hosted by American Ninja Warrior cohosts Kristine Leahy, Akbar Gbaja-Biamila and Matt Iselman. This is the 41st year for the celebration and in addition to the huge fireworks display there will be musical entertainment as well. Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Hailee Steinfeld, Charlie Puth, Jennifer Lopez and Sheryl Crow will all be performing on stage. The fireworks will also have a musical score with ten songs performed by the West Point Band, country star Craig Campbell, singer Heather Headley and opera singer Jamie Barton. The songs will incorporate a variety of genres and includes the medley “The Spirit of America.”
Macy’s promos say that the event has been in the works for over a year and is the biggest in over a decade. The department store says they increased the number of fireworks in the display from 50,000 to 60,000 and includes brand new pyrotechnic effects.
“Some 70 percent of them have never been used in the Macy’s show before,” show designer Gary Souza said. “Some aerial shells are going to have up to 11-second durations that change effects up to six, seven, eight times.”
